With the constant development of urbanization and industry, more and more industrial and utility plants are located in or directly in residential areas, which can have a negative impact on the quality of life of people in these areas.

General Details

Biofiltration

Biofiltration is the process of purifying air using microorganisms found on a solid support. The principle of operation is based on biodegradation, the passage of air through the biofilter, microorganisms convert pollutants into CO2 and water.

biofiltration scheme

Biodegradation takes place in two steps:

  1. absorption of gaseous components into the liquid phase or biofilm
  2. aerobic biodegradation of contaminants in solution or biofilm

air + H2S + NH3 + (…) + O2 -> cellular material + CO2 + H2O + H2SO4 + NH4+ ( …)

The capacity of the biofilter is up to 2000 m3/ h.

For biofiltration to be successful, several conditions must be met: the air temperature must be 5 - 40 ° C, the impurities in the air must be soluble in water and be subject to microbiological degradation, the humidity must be> 70%. Polluted air must not contain substances that are toxic to biomass, ie microorganisms, dust and grease. Purification is most optimal at an air flow of 100 - 500 m / h, and the minimum contact time between the air and the biofilter is 30 seconds.

Advantages:

  • easy to use
  • no chemicals are required in operation

In order for the filling to work most optimally, it must have a good water retention capacity, support a low pressure drop, good mechanical properties, and must have a good food source for microorganisms.

Wood chips, coconut fiber can be used as filling in biofilters…
